Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
The Kolkata Dock System of Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port (SMPK) successfully handled 48 metro coaches imported from China’s Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Company. These coaches, meant for Eastern Railway, were unloaded directly from the ship onto rail tracks and then pulled away by locomotives.
This marks the third such consignment handled at SMP Kolkata in the financial year 2025-26, highlighting the port’s increasing role in supporting metro expansion projects. Efficient handling ensured that the coaches were moved seamlessly from ship to track without delays.
Speaking on the occasion, SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman said, “The arrival of metro coaches at SMP Kolkata is not just a port operation but a symbol of our national commitment to build a new India.”
The development is expected to boost urban connectivity projects and reflects the growing importance of Kolkata port as a hub for critical imports
